View contents in Power BI platform

In Power BI, the term "content" refers to all the different ways that you can visualize and share your data. This includes apps, dashboards, and reports. Content is created by Power BI designers, who share it with their colleagues. You can access and view your content in Power BI, and the best place to start is your Home canvas.

Explore Power BI Home

Power BI Home provides three ways to find and view your content. All three methods access the same pool of content, but they provide different ways to get to it. Sometimes, searching is the easiest and quickest way to find something. Other times, selecting a tile on the Home canvas is the best option.

  • The Home canvas is a central hub for all your Power BI content. It displays your favorite and most recent content, as well as recommended content and learning resources. Each piece of content is displayed as a tile, with a title and icon. Selecting a tile opens that content.

  • The global search box lets you search for content by title, name, or keyword. This is a great way to find content that you may have forgotten about or that you don't know the name of.

  • The side navigation pane provides a list of all your content, organized by workspaces, apps, and reports. This is a great way to browse your content and find what you're looking for.

Home Canvas

The Home canvas is where you can view all the content that you have permission to use in Power BI. At first, you might not have much content, but as you start to use Power BI with your colleagues, you will start to receive dashboards, reports, and apps from them. Your Home canvas will also update with recommended content and learning resources. As you use Power BI more, your Home canvas will eventually fill in with all the content that you have permission to use.

Key metrics

As I mentioned earlier, the Home canvas is where you can view all the content that you have permission to use in Power BI. Each piece of content is displayed as a tile, and clicking on a tile will take you to that piece of content. For example, clicking on a tile for a dashboard will open the dashboard.

Important contents are listed below:

Favorites and frequents

The top section of the Home canvas contains links to the content that you visit most often or that you have tagged as a favorite. You can identify your favorite content by the stars that appear next to the tile.

Recent and My Apps

The next section displays the content you've visited most recently. Notice the timestamp on each tile. The My apps section lists apps that have been shared with you; the most recent apps are listed here.

Navigation Pane

The navigation pane is a great way to quickly find and open dashboards, reports, and apps in Power BI. It is always available, even when you are working in other areas of Power BI. The navigation pane organizes your content into categories, such as Dashboards, Reports, and Apps. To open a content section, simply click on the heading.

Search your content

Sometimes, the quickest way to find your content is to search for it. For example, you might have a dashboard that you haven't used in a while, but it's not showing up on your Home canvas. You remember that your colleague shared it with you, but you don't remember what it was called or whether it was a report or a dashboard. In this case, you can use the search bar to find the content.

You can enter the full or partial name of the dashboard or your colleague's name in the search bar to find the content. The search will look for matches in all the content that you own or have access to.
